We got an early start as we had a big passage today of over
70 miles to get to Kananga hopefully before sunset.
The terrain on Sumbawa is getting taller with large volcano's
dominating the sky line. The wind picked up for an hour or two and we were able
to sail at a reasonable speed, but it didn’t last long and we ended up motor sailing again as I want to keep out average speed up to hopefully make it to Kananga before
dark.
We passed quite a few ships and many small fishing boats
setting nets which is a new obstacle to look out for now.
This bloke came very
close for a look at us before waving goodbye
The wind came up from behind which helped blow us along at a
pretty fast average speed and I tried to sail as fast as I could to reach Kananga
before dusk.
The mountains on Sumbawa were getting greener and lusher the
further west we traveled, yet the north coast was very lightly populated and
very exposed with few anchorages.
Eventually the large volcanic Island of Pulau Satonda came
into view just as the sun was about to set and we pulled up in the small rolly
bay of Kananga just on dark, anchoring in around six meters on a sandy bottom.
After dinner, I stayed up late uploading my blog as we had
decent phone signal here while listening to the Muslim chanting over the loud
speaker that went on all night.
The wind dropped off as time went on and it turned out to be
a reasonable anchorage offering a good night’s sleep.
